Unlike other species of mango, the Asam Lepeh fruit is not rounded but flat, with a very distinct shape. When ripe, its skin takes a beautiful green-golden color and the interior is light yellow with a pronounced citric taste. It is highly appreciated in rural Borneo and although some villagers cultivate the tree and sell the fruit in local markets, outside of those small areas it is still largely unknown. Sarawakians use it as an ingredient for sambel, a traditional dish. This rare and beautiful mango is is also a great ornamental and very fragrant when in flower.
