Malpighia glabra (= M. emarginata)
Acerola, Wild Crapemyrtle
An evergreen small tree or shrub rarely more than 3 m tall, native from southern Florida and southern Texas to southern Brazil, with small, pink flowers and bright red, cherry-like fruits. The fruits are juicy and somewhat acidic and very popular and widely grown now for their high content of vitamin C and antioxidant properties. It is easy to grow in many warm temperate and tropical climates and also makes a nice ornamental.
