A very unusual, herbaceus small tree that forms an unbranched, slender stem to about 5 m tall with large, simple leaves, reminiscent of a Cordyline or a palm. Its upright, terminal inflorescence can add another 3 m to the plants height. Lobelia stuhlmannii is native to cloud forests in Eastern Africa from Uganda to Rwanda between 3000 and 3600 m elevation. In cultivation it will do well in warm temperate climates that do not show extremes of heat or cold.
