This stunning, herbaceus small tree forms and unbranched, slender stem to 5 m tall with large, simple leaves to 80 cm long that have attractive purplish stalks and midribs. Its upright, terminal inflorescence can add another 3 m to the plants height. Lobelia giberroa is widespread in montane forests in Eastern Africa from Eritrea to Zambia between 2400 and 3000 m elevation. In cultivation it will do well in warm temperate climates that do not show extremes of heat or cold.
