Livistona endauensis

Endau Fan Palm

A magnificent and rare, mid-sized Livistona found only in forests in the Endau-Rompin area of peninsular Malaysia, where it grows along ridgetops and on steep slopes on shallow soils. It forms a slender smooth trunk that carries a dense crown of glossy green leaves with rather stiff segments. It is best suited for cultivation in the tropics or in frost free warm temperate climates.

Plants from this species ...

... are of excellent ornamental value
In Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia they need average care and grow very slow.
I first became aware of this palm some 20 yrs ago and only managed to get one plant 10 yrs ago, so you palm enthusiasts are really lucky that RPS is offering the seeds now and at a great price. This palm is found only in a restricted forest area in the Endau-Rompin area which is in the central-southern part of peninsular Malaysia and it is totally protected by the forestry department. No living palm or parts of them can be removed from this area. During these 10 yrs, it grew very slowly in the city area with only 1 new leaf a year! Two months ago I moved it to my nursery which is near a forest and it is doing very much better with a new leaf emerging every month. It likes the night temp drop as in the city there is very slight variation between the day and night temp. During these 10 years, it grew only 9 inches in its trunk height. I got it as a present from a friend who has some 300+ of this palm (lucky guy!). So far it has not flowered. The leaf diameter is about 4ft+. It may be slow growing but it is certainly worth it. I have seen matured plants with trunk height of 6ft and they are really great. This makes it a true dwarf Livistona. I would put it in the same league as the Licuala mapu.

The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms is the definitive account of all palms that can be grown for ornamental and economic use. Palms are often underutilized as a result of their unfamiliarity—even to tropical gardeners. To help introduce these valuable plants to a new audience, the authors have exhaustively documented every genus in the palm family.
825 species are described in detail, including cold hardiness, water needs, height, and any special requirements. Generously illustrated with more than 900 photos, including photos of several palm species that have never before appeared in a general encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms is as valuable as an identification guide as it is a practical handbook. Interesting snippets of history, ethnobotany, and biology inform the text and make this a lively catalog of these remarkable plants.
