A small to medium tree to 18 m tall, native to Burma, Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. It has rather large, dark green leaves to 25 cm long and light brown bark. The pinkish to purplish flowers are borne in large panicles and slowly turn whiter over several days. The durable, reddish wood is popular for furniture and similar applications. It is resistant to rot and can be used outside. It makes and outstanding ornamental for the tropics in USDA Zones 10 and above.
