Needle or Temple Juniper
A small, variable tree to 10 m tall with an ascending or spreading crown and graceful, lax branchlets with short, dark green, prickly, needle-like leaves. It is found in mountainous, often dry areas from Qinghai in China east to Japan. It makes a great, very robust ornamental that is hardy to cold and drought and suitable to temperate climates in USDA Zones 4 to 8. It is also a great subject for creating bonsai and has a number of popular cultivars.
