A small herbaceous, perennial shrub with simple leaves and star-shaped, light blue to purplish white flowers that are followed by edible, sweet, orange berries. Jaltomata is closely related to the genus Solanum and shares many of its features. It also has numerous aspects of Physalis. Jaltomata sinuosa is widely distributed in scrubland, rocky outcrops and cloud forest in the Andes of western South America between 1300 and 3300 m. In cultivaton it is best adapted to warm temperate climates but can also be grown as an annual for its fruits.
