A rare, little-known herbaceous, perennial shrub rarely more than 2 m tall with simple leaves and bell-shaped purplish blue flowers that are followed by edible, sweet, orange berries. Jaltomata is closely related to the genus Solanum and shares many of its features. It also has numerous aspects of Physalis. Jaltomata bernardelloana is known only from a small area in northwestern Peru between 2800 and 3300 m. In cultivaton it is best adapted to warm temperate climates but can also be grown as an annual for its fruits.
