Parrot Gladiolus, African Gladiolus
A beautiful perennial in the Iris family, widely distributed in grassland, woodland and scrub, often in rocky areas to 2500 m in tropical and southern Africa, Madagascar and reaching the southwestern Arabian Peninsula. It produces a fan of straplike, bluish green leaves from an underground corm and tall inflorescences with usually red or orange flowers with a yellow throat. In cultivation it does well in many warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 and above. Gladiolus dalenii is one of the ancestors of the domesticated and widely planted garden gladiolus.
