Flame Lily, Gymea Lily
This attractive, flax-like plant is native to eastern New South Wales, where it grows on rocky outcrops and cliffs in light forest. It forms a cluster of rosettes of sword-like, bright green leaves to 1 m (3 ft.) tall. The tall flower spike stands well above the leaves and carries a cluster of large red flowers at the tip. Even though threatened in habitat, it adapts readily and is fairly popular in cultivation and a very easy to grow plant for warm temperate climates. Doryanthes excelsa is much smaller but hardier than Doryanthes palmeri.
