The Buan, or Simpoh in Malay, is a highly appreciated, small rainforest tree, used by the Iban people or Borneo in a variety of dishes. The young leaves serve as an ingredient in the traditional ulam, as well as a spice employed in the flavoring of rice. It is extremely fragrant and the taste is pleasantly sourish. The plant is also very decorative, with spreading branches and thick-ribbed, oval-shaped leaves. The newly emergent leaves are wine red. Certainly a marvelous addition to the tropical garden.
