A giant aroid that grows into a cluster of enormous, upright, heart-shaped leaves on long, prickly stalks to about 4 m (13 ft.) tall. Underground it produces a giant edible, though rather uninspiring, starchy tuber that can weigh up to 70 kg (150 lb). It likes a tropical climate and prefers swampy situations. Although the tuber grows slower than that of other edible aroids, it is one of the toughest and easiest to grow and able to thrive even in brackish swamps. Swamp Taro makes a magnificent ornamental for the tropical garden.
