A slender, moderately-sized tree fern from New Caledonia, where it is found in moist gully forests. Its trunk grows to about 10 m (33 ft.) tall and is marked by circular scars from fallen leaves. It holds a flat, spreading crown of tripinnate fronds to about 5 m (17 ft.) in diameter. The dark, warty leaf stalks are covered initially by black, hair-like scales. It is virtually unknown in cultivation but would make a great ornamental for tropical and warm temperate areas.
