Assegai, Cape Lancewood
A very attractive, medium-sized tree to rarely more than 15 m tall, native to forests from eastern Zimbabwe to Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland to 1800 m. Curtisia dentata forms a broad, rounded crown of glossy, dark green leaves and tiny flowers followed by clusters of decorative, long-lasting, small white fruits that are edible but bitter. The young leaves are bronzy-golden in color. The seeds germinate slowly but the seedlings are easily and quickly established. Cape Lancewood makes a wonderful ornamental for warm temperate regions but can endure only very light freezes.
