Hen-and-Chickens, Spider Plant
This attractive, robust perennial is native to the undergrowth of forests, thickets and a variety of other habitats in tropical and southern Africa at elevations between sea level and over 1000 m. Chlorophytum comosum develops dense tufts of channeled, linear, bright green leaves, from which an arching flower stalk emerges with clusters of tiny, white, star-shaped flowers. In suitable locations it can form dense stands via plantlets produced on the long inflorescences. A good choice for warm temperate climates. Variegated selections are widely grown as a house plant and are among the toughest plants for that purpose.
