A large, regal, deciduous tree that can reach more than 30 m tall, originally native to the midwestern United States, where it grows mainly in riverine forests. It forms a stocky trunk that holds a broad crown with large, light green leaves to 30 cm in length. The beautiful, white flowers are held in large clusters and are followed by long, thin pods with small, winged seeds. It is widely popular as an ornamental and is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Its soft and light but rot resistant wood is popular for furniture, carving and boat building.
