Caryota obtusa (China)
Giant Fishtail Palm
This little known plant grows in wet forests the mountains of southern China from the foothills of the Himalayas eastwards to northernmost Vietnam, where it seems to be associated with limestone outcrops. While it exhibits the same general habit as the C. obtusa from India and Thailand, it is altogether smaller in stature, forming a more slender and shorter trunk. The few, magnificent, flat, large leaves are reminiscent of a giant tree fern. The seeds are similar to but much smaller than those of the Thai and Indian forms.
