Canarium indicum (Ambae Giant) Nangai Tree This particular cultivar is known for producing copious amounts of delectable nuts and is a favorite with the locals on the small volcanic island of Ambae and one of the five most popular varieties from Vanuatu that are said to have been hand selected and passed down through the generations for hundreds of years. The nuts are preferably eaten fresh, though just as commonly dried or lightly roasted and are highly appreciated for their fresh and crisp, irresistibly nutty, yet delicately buttery flavor. Like all varieties of C. indicum, Ambae Giant requires tropical conditions for best results. The island nut farmers claim that it can produce quality nuts in as little as 5 years from seed, and that trees reach maximum productivity at around 9 years of age. Ambae Giant is ideal for commercial orchards as well as for home gardens as it also makes a wonderful ornamental. It is also appreciated for its light construction wood. |
