Common Sweetshrub, Carolina Allspice
A pretty, deciduous shrub rarely more than 2 m tall with bright green leaves and masses of small, wine red, strawberry-scented and magnolia-like flowers. Calycanthus floridus var. floridus is native to the southestern United States from Pennsylvania to Florida and Alabama. It makes a nice ornamental for temperate climates in USDA Zone 5 and above. The bark, flowers and other parts of the plant are aromatic and occasionally used as a spice or perfume. The seeds in particular are poisonous.
