A shrub or small tree, usually no more than about 4 m tall with pretty, pinnate foliage and hanging clusters of attractive, bright yellow, pea-like flowers. Calpurnia aurea subsp. aurea is widespread in forests in eastern and southern Africa. In cultivation it is easily grown in many tropical and warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 9 and above. Seeds germinate easily and quickly after soaking.
