A large, columnar cactus to 10 m tall with a candelabra-like crown of slender, ribbed, bluish shoots to 8 cm in diameter, formidably armed with long, yellow spines. It is native to southern Peru, where it grows in high elevation desert, various scrublands or dry forests. In cultivation it is best suited to dry climates in USDA Zones 10 and above. The edible fruits can be eaten raw or used to prepare jams and jellies.
