A large, densely clustering bamboo with dark green culms to more than 20 m (65 ft.) tall and to 15 cm (6 in.) in diameter. The large, wide leaves can reach a length of 30 cm (12 in.). It is widely distributed in the tropics from southern Africa to southern Asia and into the Pacific. It is best suited to cultivation in the tropics in USDA zones 10 and above, and popular in India and elsewhere for its strong, thick-walled culms that are used in construction. The young shoots are edible.
