A perennial herb, native to the southern half of Africa, where it grows in a variety of habitats, from forest margins to grasslands, scrublands and riverbanks. It has basal, lanceolate, bright green leaves and attractive, blue to purple flowers, which bloom and fade in the course of a single day. Fortunately, it blooms multiple times throughout the year. Aristea ecklonii is an excellent plant for the warm-temperate garden in USDA Zones 9 and above, but its cultivation should be carefully supervised, due to some invasive potential.
