Aristea capitata (= A. major)
A large, Iris-like perennial herb, native to South Africa's southwestern Cape Province, where it grows on grassy slopes. From an underground rhizome, it forms large clusters of strap-shaped leaves that give rise to tall inflorescences to 1.5 m tall with striking, bright blue flowers. Aristea capitata is an excellent plant for the warm-temperate garden in USDA Zones 9 and above and particularly well suited for Mediterranean climates.
