Konjac Voodoo Lily
Devil’s Tongue, Snake Palm, Konjac, Konnyaku Potato, Elephant Yam or Voodoo Lily are some of the popular names given to this aroid native to subtropical forests in China's Yunnan province, perhaps mostly on behalf of its strange, smelly, red or eerie purple inflorescence that can grow to nearly 2 m tall from its large underground tuber before the plants single, pinnate, deciduous leaf appears. Although perhaps not quite as spectacular as some of the giant tropical Amorphophallus, this plant is an easy to house and to cultivate alternative that will even thrive in a moderately sized pot. The starchy tuber is popular in Asian cuisine and has medicinal properties.
