Echinopsis pachanoi (= Trichocereus peruvianus) Pitaya, Dragon Fruit
A large cactus to about 3 m tall with thick, blue, upright to decumbent, branching stems that can reach 15 cm in diameter. The large fuzzy areoles hold 6 or more short, radial spines and 1 or more long central spine. New spines are initially blood red to yellow and fade to black and then dull gray or white with age. The large, fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers open at night and are followed by sweetly scented, edible and tasty fruits that are considered a choice “Pitahaya”. Native to dry hillsides in Ecuador and Peru between 1600 and 3400 m. In cultivation it does well in many warm temperate climates. |
