(Deutsche Beschreibung in Kürze verfügbar) This dioecious, perennial trailing vine from the pumpkin family (Cucurbitaceae) produces smallish, slightly spiny, orange fruits. The arils surrounding the seeds are a deep blood red and have the highest known concentration of beta-carotene in any fruit or vegetable. The fruit is widely grown in India and South East Asia and people use it in various ways. Its tender young fruits are a mainstay in many Indian dishes. In Vietnam it is preferred as a colorant for rice, turning it a beautiful orange-red. The seeds offered here are from a wild strain in eastern Sabah on the island of Borneo. They should be carefully scarified and germinate easily with warmth and adequate moisture.
